    Muted respect

    http://www.sportsnet.ca/mma/2011/09/21/koscheck_josh_640_381.jpg

Josh Koscheck says Matt Hughes has been a great fighter in the UFC but now his time has passed.

I am in Denver and am ready to fight. People have asked about how hard the weight cut has got because I took this fight at short notice, but the truth is I am always about two or three weeks away from fight shape. That won't be a factor or issue; you won't have that excuse from me if anything doesn't go my way at UFC 135.

I like stirring things up with my opponents, everyone knows I do that, but it's hard to do that in a couple of weeks. I'm not trying to disrespect Matt Hughes. The fact is he's done a lot as a representative of the sport, he's been a great champion, and we actually are a lot alike in that we both say what we think and feel and who care if anyone likes it or not.

But Hughes "big-timed" me by not fighting me when he was a main eventer and champion. It wasn't personal, but he thought he was above me at the time and maybe he was. I get it. Maybe I big-timed the other guys the UFC asked me to fight, but I wanted a name and said I wanted to fight someone else. That's life.

And I stand by what I said. Matt Hughes isn't a top fighter anymore. He's dangerous, he can take me down and pound on me, but if I am going to get back up there and look at a second title shot I need to be able to get past the Matt Hughes of 2011.

Hughes's time has passed, and his days are numbered until Saturday and then I think he will walk away from fighting. He's been great, but that only gets you so far in this sport.

The time off has gone great for me. The first three months sucked. Even running was out for three months, every little knock or movement hurt my eye so bad. Flying was painful because of the change in pressure... I'd sit there gritting my teeth during flights because the bones in my eye would move as the air pressure changed. But by like March I was back in training and by early May I was 100 per cent in shape to where I could fight.

I fight three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday with guys like Jon Fitch. My weight on the day I got the fight was 193 pounds, my weight today is 177. Making the weight isn't even going to be an issue and I'm not worried about it at all.

Maybe I needed the break anyway. I'd been fighting and doing the TUF series almost back-to-back-to-back and maybe I needed to do "normal person" stuff for six months. I played a lot of video games, hung out and had a routine of going to my office -- the AKA gym -- and going home to do normal stuff. It's a great way to live and I liked having a routine and not doing filming or building to a fight.

I'm very happy with what's going on in my life and I really, truly don't care what people think about me. I'm going to give a great performance on Saturday night.

You'll see some changes to my game -- and that's thanks to the break I had. With no fight coming up or specific style to work for, I just enjoyed being a student again and learning some stuff again for the fun of it. I've changed up my game and I think you'll see the improvements.

To those commentating on my blogs, I appreciate the comments. I've got nothing against Canada but I also had fun being the guy you guys loved to hate for a year. I actually loved the two times I fought there, it was a great experience. I'm not trying to kiss ass with these blogs, but it's good to know a lot of you "get it" that I was playing up to have fun and hype the fights.

If people don't like me, who cares, I keep it real. Don't tune in. Actually, do tune in and see if I actually do get my ass kicked.

Kos Blog on SportsNet.ca Part 2

    Owe it to the fans

    http://www.sportsnet.ca/mma/2011/09/14/koscheck_josh_640_381.jpg

Josh Koscheck wants to put on an exciting show after feeling his GSP fight didn’t live up to the hype.

I play this bad guy role for the camera and, yeah, I have fun with it. The people who know me know that I'm not always cocky or arrogant and talking smack but, sure, I have fun with the promotional side of this sport. I get my name out there and people react to me.

I laugh at lot at some of the stuff I read about myself; it's funny to me how excited and upset people get about some of the things I say. I know who I really am as a person, away from TV, and I'd rather people boo me than hit the hotdog stands when I walk to the Octagon.

Y'know I don't care too much what perfect strangers think about me as a person, but I do care about having the respect of the fight fans as a UFC fighter.

That's why I take it seriously that I let the fans down in my last fight. I think I am respected as a contender and as a guy who comes to fight, who started off as a pure wrestler who is now a mixed martial artist.

I've been on the shelf since December and, I'm honest, my last fight sucked. After all the talk and hype I couldn't do anything with GSP with one eye and I let the fans down.

It wasn't a great fight. I don't care if they boo me or cheer me, but they pay to see me fight and on that night I didn't fulfill my side of the deal because it wasn't a great fight. I hung in there in a lot of pain to give them five full rounds, but it wasn't a great fight and no one was happy with it, especially me.

I owe it to the fans and myself to come back and give them a fight they can get excited about -- and a lot of people are excited to see me against Matt Hughes next weekend.

That kind of respect -- the respect for me as a fighter and not a TUF coach or someone who says things in interviews -- does matter and I owe the fans a great fight after the GSP fight didn't live up to the hype.

I'll tell you exactly why I went out there on Twitter to try to force Matt Hughes into a corner and accept this fight with me at UFC 135 next Saturday. Here's what is up: Matt Hughes used to be one of the best. Used to be. Right now he's nowhere near even one of the best in the world. Where is he ranked? Probably not in a lot people's top 10.

But he's still got that name and is a two-time champion, and beating a name like that in my comeback fight means something.

That's the funny thing. I was prepared to fight middleweights like Chris Leben or even a light heavyweight like Rich Franklin (as long as we met at middleweight) because I know I need a big name to come back to fight.

Instead, I got lucky to get Hughes, a guy who cannot beat my style and he knows it. He can't strike with me and he can't use his wrestling against me like he could some of the guys he's been beating.

That's my thinking, I've been out for a long while. I need a big fight, a big name and I know I can look devastating again against Hughes and it will be a highlight of the night. It will be a tough fight, a battle and it will be exciting with the styles mixing together. It is exactly what I need right now and exactly what he doesn't need right now.

There's no real issue with me and Hughes. It is just he said it numerous times he didn't want to fight any of us from AKA, my train team, and it is long overdue he fights one of us.

Now I am going put Matt Hughes in his place. When he was on top, he wouldn't give any of us "kids" our shot at him. He never manned up. Now he's been forced to fight me and this is going to be so much fun.

Josh Koscheck reacquaints himself with Canadian fans in an exclusive blog, now with his sights on Matt Hughes.

Hello Canada, it has been a while.

As you probably remember the last time I was in the UFC Octagon was December 11, 2010, challenging your boy Georges St-Pierre for the UFC welterweight world title in Montreal at UFC 124.

It was a rough night for me. Pretty much the first punch Georges landed, a hard jab, broke my orbital socket (the round bone in your skull that your eyes sit in) but also my orbital plate (the cheekbone).

I had no depth perception and was basically a one-eyed fighter for the next 23 minutes. I can man up but the pain was just horrible. It hurt worse than anything I've ever experienced. It hurt even more than when I cut my big toe off when I was six -- when I was playing with my grandfather's axe being a little shit.

Seriously -- the eye hurt way worse than chopping my big toe off.

I had major surgery after the fight. The doctors told me that I took the punch right in the eyeball, and what happens when the eye takes a direct impact is the bone explodes and drops down in order to stop the pressure to the eye resulting in an exploding eyeball.

So there I was, first or second minute into the biggest fight of my life, and I'm lucky my eyeball hadn't just exploded. Thing is, the fact I'd talked so much trash about Georges and I'd helped hype the fight so hard for so long, I couldn't let everyone down by pulling out with an injury after a couple of minutes. I feel bad the fight didn't live up to the hype, but I did my best to clip GSP with a punch somehow.

Props to GSP, he won fair and square. It wasn't a thumb or a finger to the eye or anything -- he damaged me with a punch. GSP got another big win and I had fell flat on my face in front of thousands in the arena and millions around the world. And it got worse because I was told I'd be out a long time.

But this summer, I was able to start training again and by July was ready to fight. You probably saw that I was considering going to middleweight, and the reason I wanted to fight at middleweight was everyone at 170 pounds who meant anything was already locked up with a fight.

Watch UFC Fight Night: Battle on the Bayou live on Sportsnet East, Ontario and West this Saturday at 9 p.m. ET. Jake Shields faces Jake Ellenberger in the main event, while sportsnet.ca blogger Jason MacDonald takes on Alan Belcher.

To be honest, and mentioning no names, the people the UFC wanted me to fight just didn't interest me at all. The names they offered me were just "paydays" -- fights to get on a card and have a fight, take a shower get a payday and go home and I don't want to fight those guys.

After the GSP fight, I needed to come back and remind everyone what I am all about and if I couldn't do that at 170 pounds I figured maybe as a one-off just to have a major fight to come back with, I'd take a fight at 185 pounds. Realistically, I asked to fight Wanderlei Silva, Chris Leben and even Rich Franklin at 185.

But then last week I got word Matt Hughes, who has avoided me for years, needed an opponent for UFC 135 in Denver on Sept. 24. I've called out Hughes for so long but he's always avoided me. When he was on top and one of the top in the division, he used his position to avoid fighting me and all the AKA guys.

But when Diego Sanchez pulled out hurt with three weeks to go, I knew the UFC would have no choice but to try to talk Hughes into fighting me. Like I knew he would, he tried to suggest fighting Jon Fitch instead, knowing full well Fitch is still recovering from shoulder surgery.

I tweeted that I'd accepted the fight and was ready, just to put pressure on Hughes to quit bitching and take the fight. I wanted to make it so that if he did turn the fight down, all the fans would know that he bitched out.

He had nowhere else to go and I've finally got my fight with Matt Hughes.

    Dove Hunting in Mexico

I think!?!? things are pretty sweet in the KOS world. I have been really good with almost every area of life. Still no time for training yet due to the eye still has numbness. So I get to spend time doing cool shit like going dove hunting in Mexico.

We go to Mexico a lot to hunt because it has some of the best dove and mule deer hunting around. So the first couple of days in Mexico, we started out with DOVE slaying. Haha there are a bunch of pictures in the photo gallery of the dove hunting. It's always one of the best trips everytime we go.

Now let the fun begin, Papa Z overheard the hunting guides talking about this monster mule deer on this ranch, So he started asking funny questions about the deer. I totally could see where this was going. If you know Papa Z, he's crazy about hunting. At this point, I'm thinking to myself "this is going to end up a deer hurting trip too".  lol sweet.

So let the quest start for this monster mule deer. We drive out to this ranch and let me tell you it's out in the middle of nowhere Mexico. The country is so amazing. We pull up and talk to two Mexican cowboys. They start pointing us in the right direction as to where the big monster has been spotted on the ranch. At this point it's late afternoon and we are driving in a truck around the ranch really slow to get to the spot. We get within a half mile of where the big mule deer has been spotted several times. So load up all our hunting stuff and start tracking.

So if you don't know anything about hunting deer, deer are very smart, the winds and smell of humans play a key factor in the hunt. As we walk to the field where the mule deer have been spotted before, we are checking the wind quite often. We walk up to the edge of the field and the monster is there!

We are about 550 yards away from the biggest mule deer I've ever seen. It probably would score B&C 215, which could be a record. Now the shitty part is we don't have the right gun to shoot over 500 yards. " just our luck". So se are on hands and knees and we get to about 450 yards away and at this point it's too dark to shoot. So we just watch the king of Mexico walk into the dark. :( sad but we now are pumped because we saw him and figured he'd be back tomorrow. :)))

So our trip is extended for another night in Mexico who can complain? Not me. Haha. Next morning 4am the plan is to be back in the field. But this time no deer. We are thinking "oh no this isn't happening to us". This goes on for 3 more days. Tracking this monster mule deer. After the 3rd day of this deer hiding he's back in the field. 6:30 am on the 4th day.

Now the crazy part is it's still pretty dark at this point... There are several big mule deer in the field. Papa Z up to shoot first... The guide is telling him "take the shot, take the shot", he says over and over again. Papa is saying I can't see. Haha God help us at this point. Talk about pressure? Biggest mule deer ever and can't see the flipping deer in the scope 400 yards away. If we don't shoot now it could be gone at any second and it could take another 3-4 days to see him again.

So Papa Z goes up to the sky line where he can see the light in the scope and brings it down on the deer. Think about taking a chance?!?! Wow because it was dark he couldn't see the cross arrows in the scope. So he finds the deer in the scope and (BANG) fires a big old 7mm shot loud as shit.

At this point it's still a little dark and the guide said it sounds like you hit him. The deer are scared and running crazy. We wait about 4-5 mins before we start walking and as we are waiting we see a big muley limping but getting ready to jump the tree line.  So Papa Z rips off another round and drops the deer.

Josh Koscheck BlogWe walk over to the mule deer and it's the smaller one of the bunch :( we are so sad but happy at the same time because we aren't going home empty handed. So this is my story of the big one that really got away. We know where he is and will be keeping our fingers crossed to go back and kill the monster mule deer of Mexico next time. The pictures below are the smaller mule deer. Hope you enjoyed my hunting trip...Until next time.... Hunt on ;) thank you Kos

    Post UFC 124 Blog - March 2011

Here is a short blog with lots of pictures! I know it's been awhile since my last blog, so here's a long time in a nut shell. Let's start with the GSP fight? In the first round, George  punched me in the flipping eye ball and it blew out the right orbital bone! I came back to the corner and ya CRAZY Bob started yelling at me haha... I said hey Bob slow down I broke something in my flipping eye! Bob said to me suck it up we have to win this fight. I was like no shit ok let's go!!!

Pic of the eye a couple days after the fight.

    http://desmond.yfrog.com/Himg615/scaled.php?tn=0&server=615&filename=dekk.jpg&xsize=640&ysize=640

So here I am in the cage at the Bell Center 25,000 people yelling their faces off at me, ok at least 24,995 where yelling at me. Hehe I have a broken face and a bunch of nuts yelling at me...real fun right? Well it was a blast for me :) one of the things I really remember from the fight was I felt like my teeth on the right side of my mouth were falling out. Ya crazy... I busted a nerve in my cheek that attaches to my teeth. Even though my teeth were still there every time GSP punched me in the face, it felt like they were falling out. It's been 3 months since the fight and my teeth still flipping hurt, so ya I have GSP on my mind a lot. lol fucker.

After my GSP fight, I went to Boston because I coundn't fly due to the eye swelling! So me and Crazy Bob hopped into a car the next day for the road to recovery! I got my eye surgery, which sucked big balls because all I wanted to do was go home before Xmas. Thank God for Dana's best friend Donnie being in Boston taking care of me or else I would have went crazy or should I say more crazy? Haha!  Surgery went as best as it could have been expected. I spent about 10 days in a Boston hotel. Well I finally made it home before Xmas, coming home to a new house, which was under construction from the remodel was real fun.

Remodel? wow! what a fun project..... I posted a lot of pictures on my twitter of the fun deal! @joshkoscheck. Where do I go next?  I have been traveling like crazy around the world doing appearances. It seems as after the eye surgery, I can't train so I might as well travel and have some vacation time.

Here are a ton of pictures from my traveling - enjoy the pictures. I will also be putting together some cool videos on a blog soon.

TUF 12 and the countdown to UFC124

I haven't had minute to sit down and take a deep breath. Training is back in full gear for me now. I know the ups & downs of camp all too well - some days great - some days shitty.  It's all part of the grind so I can be my best on December 11th, when I get a second crack at GSP in his hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

I would love to tell you more about TUF 12 and share some inside scoop but contract stuff makes it so I can't - so you gotta keep watching ... I think the season has gone pretty well so far. It's nuts to see how far the UFC has grown over the last couple of years and the major part of this is because of the TUF series. The ratings are strong so far; please keep spreading the word about MMA. Below are some pictures I took of the TUF 12 training center. I won't comment anymore on the season; now on to my life. :)

My life never seems to be anything different than a beautiful struggle. From training to just everyday life...don't get me wrong I am one blessed kid and I love what I do every day. I was talking with my mom about this yesterday. I said to my mom, "it hasn't been an easy road to get here today mom." She said, "son, you are a very blessed  young man because of the hard work you put into a dream"- You know what mom?  I couldn't agree with you more. I am walking a dream every day to get to wake up and do a job that I love!

I could tell you that hard work...pays off every day but you also have to bring belief and desire
to your dream. You have to be willing to put the hard work into what your looking for in life from personal goals to relationships. It takes a drive that you must wake up every day and be at your best even when things aren't going your way.

Let's look at it this way:  Every person in the world deals with bullshit stuff at some point or another through their lifetime. It's just the nature of life or the cycle of life.  Either way we sometimes have to go through hell to get to heaven. Myself, I am just trying to follow my heart...because it's 100xs stronger than my brain.

People these days just don't get the entertainment side of this crazy business. We as fighters, sometimes have to do, say and act different on TV to keep it exciting so people tune in and the ratings stay high. Don't look at it any other way than that. If you do? Just keep reading below!

Hate me or love me,  just don't misunderstand me. Really most people are just dumb fucking puppets, like a dog that wears what someone else tells them too, stand where someone else tells them to stand, says what someone else tells them to say, that's not expression... That's not life, that's not creativity! I have more to offer than that. Ask yourself what is your purpose here on earth? Well mine is to be happy, express myself how I want to and live my life how I want!  You know all you can do in this world is do something for yourself and be happy doing it. That's why a lot of people love to hate me and it's funny to see. What more can I say? I do and say what I want to and if you don't like it then don't tune in to KOS but you won't because you're puppets or you just love me that much. lol. I love expression.

These days #teamkos has lost some members but I am not going to wait around wasting what I do have, by wanting what I don't have! Sometimes we don't have any other choices in life to wait around on something or someone. Time to get cracking on my life, dream with seven weeks until showtime. Here are some pictures from over the last couple of weeks.

First Day of Filming TUF 12

Here is a lil blog about my move to Vegas and my first day of filming TUF 12:

I moved to Vegas to start filming TUF 12: Team GSP vs Team Koscheck. I didn't really know what to expect since I haven't really had time to watch the TUF show since season 1. When I arrived in Vegas, I checked in with the Spike TV production team and went over all of the rules for this season's show. The UFC gym had been remodeled since season 1 and looked incredible with all the upgrades.  After more of the bs stuff, we (my coaching staff and I) checked into our condos... My new home for 8 weeks. I was thinking, "yuck, I can't deal that I am living in Vegas again like this, but hey, this time around I have my cell phones and can come and go as I want. Not too bad.?!?!?

Finally after settling in a little, I went to watch my friends from Good Charlotte play at The Hard Rock. I am always down for some good old fashion rock bands. I met up with my boy @DCMA_Collective , @JoelMadden , @benjaminmadden and the lovely, @hollymadison123 and her crew. I also, got to see All Time Low... kick ass band.  We ended the night with some dinner with Tal, the amazing @angeljoooones, Ted aka "short stacks" and @cormier2010. Overall, it was a very chill night gearing up for TUF 12.

Episode 1 of TUF 12: Wow, looking like it's going to be a great season! I really didn't know what to expect last night on the 1st episode, but I knew there where some good fights that the fans would enjoy. You guys will not want to miss this season if you like great fights and drama!  After seeing last night's ending & preview, you can see there is a lot of drama coming!  I can't wait to see next weeks show already. Hey, Spike TV, please send it to me early because I can't wait, lol.

Well, that is all for now.   I will have a lil blog every week to give my fans my thoughts on each episode. Thank you fans for making this sport kick ass!

Well my first real vacation in a long time to recover my mind.  Damn what a way to roll.  I want to send a big thank you out to the Gray Cliffs in the Bahamas, damn that place is killer!  As I was on vacation I found this and took it to heart.  So I thought I would share it with you.

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and detemination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."

Sometimes I ask God a lot of questions about my life. I sometimes don't understand how crazy this world is. Even though I have seen almost everything and been all over the world, I still question life and think about what we deal with in life.

So the slogan "press on" hit me hard. I have learned so much over the years and feel like I bumped into this slogan for a reason. I know first hand that times can be tough for us out there alone. In life, when you're up it fills you like you're on top of the world. When you're down, all you want is to be up again. The slogan "press on" has help me look back at my life and see that by pressing on in times of struggles I am a stronger and better person now.

So when you're dealing with some crazy shit in life and it's got you cut down to you're knees, keep "pressing on" even though it hurts because you'll come out on top in the end.

Now back from vacation I have been trainging and feel great. I know I have a lot of work to do, but I am so ready to put the time in to get that frenchy!

My training has been great so far. I am working really hard. I am going to post alot of photos and videos over this trainng camp. Here we gooooooooooooo people - let's get pumped.

    It's team Koscheck's time!

    Koscheck's response to Yves Lavigne:

"UFC referee, Yves Lavigne is clearly not suited to be a referee after his rant of personal attacks and opinions on me as a fighter.  It’s supposed to be his job to look at a fight unbiased, but how can anyone trust this guy to fairly referee any fight ever again after his comments?  It's scary to think this guy has been calling fights in the octagon for this long. It's very fair to say Mr. Lavigne will never ref one of my fights again. I would never put all my hard work as a fighter or my livelihood in the hands of this ref.

The (UFC) and the commission would be irresponsible to let him continue his job- any call this guy makes would have to be questioned. You call MMA a professional sport?  Well, professional starts at the top. Never would an NFL, NBA or other major sports official state there personal opinions publicly about a player and keep their job.  I now question every call Yves has ever made as a referee. Hopefully no fighter ever has to step into a fight with Yves Lavigne as referee.  Better get that resume ready Lavigne….."

    TUF 12 Filming Concluded

Well TUF 12 filming is in the books. I can't wait until the show airs.  It's going to be a great season. I just want to say thank you to Spike TV, UFC and everyone involved in producing the show. I feel this is going to be a season you will remember :)

This blog, I wrote on the plane from Las Vegas to Fresno after the wrap of filming TUF 12 season. Now that filming is complete, it's time to start turning my eyes to my one goal! Here we go people...let the road to the title start!

It's time to start getting my eyes set on my dream of being the next UFC Welterweight Champion and bringing the belt home to Fresno. Being at home has been kinda nice for a change. I really have enjoyed my family time and getting to go in and see all the fighters at my gym @akafresno.

Throughout one's life the experiences that we go through always help us become the person we are! Looking back at my life and my childhood, it's so crazy to see myself here today, looking at my life and how far I have come. Counting my blessings every night.

It's going to feel weird not being miked up and not having a camera crew in your face all the time. lol. But I am happy to get to spend some time at home. I think it's been 6 months since I've really got to sleep at my own house for more than 1 night at a time. Yep that kinda sucks but hard work always pays off. Even if I don't see the return on it today, I'll see it down the road.

It's been a real busy week at home working very late nights to get things back in order. I have spent a lot of time with nieces and nephews, which is what I do 95% of the time I am in Fresno. God, it seems life is just passing by so fast. I hope I am not missing out on something or what, but isn't 2010 almost over? Wow flying. I have been back in the gym training every day pretty hard to get my strength back with my personal trainer.

I am leaving for the Bahamas for a little bit of alone and downtime this weekend. I can't wait to just chill and do some crazy swimming and maybe surfing if we can find some waves. I'll have my camera with me everywhere I go so I'll be sure to have lots of photos. I will also be updating my twitter every day, be sure to follow me on there.

Get ready UFC fans bc I am back and we are going to end 2010 with a boom. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and enjoy your week and Here are some fun photos from the past week:

    Josh Koscheck Blog 2 - Monday, July 12, 2010

I am laying in bed jamming to some music..writing my blog. At nights, when I am alone, is my best time to reflect on life; think about my past, think about the future. I have to get busy on accomplishing some big stuff this year. Can't wait to finish this year with a bang!

TUF 12 is almost over...only 3 more day of filming left. Man, never thought I would say this about Vegas, but I am going to miss you Vegas. :( ...kinda sad I have to leave soon! This was a great experance for me so far and I have learned so much about myself this trip. This past week with the help of my Vegas crew we found the best local bar in all of Vegas called "Double Down Saloon"- famous for Ass Juice Shots. Hells ya fools! I would def say you have to check this joint out.

We will have memories to last us a lifetime. I fell in love all over again with my lil chewy, dam chewy, I love you! The next chapter of my life is about to take on a whole new level. Can't even deal with how blessed I have been. Sometimes in life when your coming up through the grinder and you're so focused on winning, its so hard to see the bigger picture in life. One reason why for me, It's called the "beautiful struggle". Take a deep breath sometimes people, look around you and see the important things in this world. Here are sone of my memory's from last couple of weeks. Enjoy
